EXAMINING DIVE DECISIONS
I was very surprised and also concerned
that the dive decision detailed in
“Prioritizing Gas Supply” (“Dive
Decisions,” Skills in Action, Spring
2012) was presented as a safe diving
decision. The description of the dive
gives me the impression that the team
lacked proper gas-planning skills, but
more important, the two buddies who
stayed at depth to complete their skills
and collect their deployed equipment
decided their equipment was more
important than their team member. If
the author had encountered a problem
during ascent, who was going to help
him? No piece of dive equipment is
worth the life of a dive buddy. The
team should have ascended together
and returned on another dive (or
day) to collect their deployed gear.
I feel it is irresponsible to promote
the decision made by this team (as
it was a team decision) as a safe and
correct decision.

MIXED SIGNALS
On Page 47 of the Spring 2012 Alert
Diver, it says, “Always lay cylinders down
...” and “... find some shade for them....”
On Page 67, those sure are some colorful
tanks they have standing up in the sun
on Little Cayman.
— Ken Niessen, Ojai, Calif.
Good eye, Ken. We had this same
conversation when choosing images
for that issue, fearing the tanks might
be perceived as functional ones. The
reality is that these tanks are long out
of hydro, haven’t held air for years
and are kept around the dock at Little
Cayman Beach Resort as decoration.
I know that because I was there, but
looking at the photo on the printed
page right now I see the tanks look as
if they could still be in service. Sorry if
it seemed like a mixed message. The
words in the tank safety article are
accurate.

STAYING FRESH
Every time the letter carrier delivers
the new issue of Alert Diver to
our small, central Virginia horse
farm, a wave of excitement for the
underwater world is rekindled. Some
years our family can only make it to
the oceans of the world for one short
period of time, and this leaves my
granddaughter and me returning to
the sea as divers in need of experience.
Each issue of Alert Diver helps us keep
our knowledge fresh and contributes
to our safe enjoyment of the next
trip. We thank you for that and the
beautiful pictures.
