WHAT’S NEW ON
ALERTDIVER.COM
Investing in People
More than half of all animal
extinctions have occurred on
islands, which make up only
5 percent of the Earth’s land
surface. Read about Seacology
(Page 20) to find out how
this nonprofit organization is
working with local communi-
ties to preserve the world’s
biodiversity. Learn more about
its approach in the video,
Introduction to Seacology.
A Guest Among Emperors
Read “Life and Stress at the
Ice Edge,” Paul Nicklen’s
riveting account of predators
and prey in the Ross Sea
(Page 16). Then watch a first-
hand account of his experi-
ences while there on assign-
ment for National Geographic
in his presentation on
National Geographic Live.
Preserved History and
Pristine Reefs
From an expansive collec-
tion of World War II relics to
massive schools of barracuda
and bigeye trevally jacks, the
remote Solomon Islands offer
poignant perspectives on his-
tory and marine abundance.
Read “Cruising the Solomons” by Stephen Frink (Page 66), and
then check out the bonus photo gallery for more images from the
islands’ rich waters.
Underwater Delights
Bali is a must-see destina-
tion for countless topside
reasons, and Alex Mustard
makes a compelling case for
its world beneath the waves
(“Bali Road Trip,” Page
74). Don’t miss the bonus
gallery, which offers an
extended tour of this alluring
island.
to go. We hoped, for example, that if a member
had a question about cancer and scuba diving, he
might recall it was in the issue that had a photo of
a harp seal on the cover (Spring 2013). Whatever
mnemonic device a reader might use to remember
which article was where, we wanted an archive of
issues to be easily at hand, and for that we needed
a tablet edition.
Beginning with Fall 2011 and for 10 issues
now, Alert Diver is available free of charge to all
DAN members on their iPad, iPhone or Android
device. I’m still not sure whether or not this is
widely known yet, as it seems to be a surprise
when I mention it to friends on boats. If you
haven’t yet, try it. Go to the App Store, Google
Play or the Amazon Appstore, and download the
free Alert Diver app. Apple (iOS) devices require
users to log in: Go to the Newsstand, tap the app,
go to the “Editions” screen, and tap the “Log in”
button at the top right corner. Log in with the
email address DAN has on file for you and your
last name, exactly as it appears on you DAN card
(the last-name field is case sensitive).
Alert Diver in print form is available only to
DAN members in North America, but anyone
anywhere can subscribe to the tablet edition and
receive notifications each time we post a new
quarterly issue. The tablet edition also offers
considerable bonus content each issue, including
slide shows and videos in support of select
articles. The navigation is simple and intuitive,
and the reading experience is excellent. We
recognize that most of our readers still embrace
print — they like to hold a magazine in their
hands and peruse it at their leisure. They like to
be able to share it with visitors to their home,
and they like to refer to back issues. I do, too.
It is our goal with each new issue of Alert Diver
to produce a magazine of extraordinary quality in
terms of words, photos, printing and design. We
hope you enjoy these incremental improvements
as we evolve. Any time you have questions or
concerns, please feel free to reach out to us; we read
every email that comes to us via
.
We love hearing from you and learning from you
what it takes to continually improve.
