DAN Education:
Then and Now
I
n 1991 DAN® research
showed that less than
one-third of injured divers
received 100 percent
oxygen as first aid. In response,
DAN introduced the dive
industry’s first oxygen provider
program and quickly developed
a nationwide network to offer
first-aid training to scuba divers.
Since then, DAN has
updated course materials
regularly and added new
programs as more divers
sought first-aid training.
To date, DAN has trained
more than 200,000 providers
worldwide and certified DAN
Instructors in more than 100
countries; DAN Education
materials have been translated
into 16 languages.
With the release of new
Guidelines for Resuscitation
by the International Liaison
Council on Resuscitation
(
ILCOR) in the fall of 2010,
DAN began a redesign of its
diving first aid programs. The
resulting update of course
materials was the first full
revision in more than 10 years.
The revisions, which were
released this year, include
updated and expanded content,
full-color photos and graphics
and new high-definition video
support materials.
Many of the course changes
were in response to comments
received over the years from
instructors and students. Changes
include combining Oxygen First
Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
and Advanced Oxygen First Aid
for Scuba Diving Injuries into
a single course, incorporating
AED training into the Basic
