Dive accidents are often the result of a chain of events rather
than a single factor. This presentation by DAN
®
medical
information specialist Marty McCafferty, EMT-P, DMT, covers
commonly encountered hazards and illuminates key decision
points at which divers can interrupt sequences of events to
prevent accidents.
The lecture highlights the importance of refreshing
skills before they degrade; it includes recommendations
for practicing rarely used but essential skills such as air
sharing as well as commonly used skills such as buoyancy
control that may need refining. Even the most essential
and seemingly unforgettable skills may be ignored. Despite
the obvious importance of breathing gas management, for
instance, divers too frequently find themselves out of or
dangerously low on gas. Using DAN’s dive-accident and
fatality data, this talk presents practical, usable ideas for
avoiding hazards that can lead to bad outcomes.

Life Support: CPR and First Aid
course and updating the format
of the Neurological Assessment
course. The result is a reduction
from 15 to a total of eight more
robust, streamlined and focused
programs.
New photographs, videos and
graphics are an integral part of
the redesigned courses. Video
production took place over 35
shooting days in seven different
locations and involved more
than 50 cast and crew members.
All scenes were captured using
high-definition video for crisp
presentations of demonstration-
quality skills. All student
manuals, instructor guides,
instructor slide presentations,
waterproof slates, videos and
trainer materials were recreated
to reflect the revisions.
Additionally, all the new
student materials were
converted into downloadable
digital manuals, which include
multimedia bonus content to
illustrate advanced concepts.
Digital manuals allow for updates
when new research becomes
available; students and instructors
will always be able to download
the most current copy of the
materials. Digital manuals also
allow improved availability of
Spanish, French and Portuguese
versions, so the new courses can
be shared with DAN America’s
extended family of divers in
North and South America.
With this newly updated and
redesigned suite of educational
programs, DAN is reaffirming its
commitment to promoting dive
safety. Safety is not an accident,
it’s a consequence of education.
