Association’s

Dive Safety Seminar
April 2, 2014; Durham, N.C.
Most people are familiar with the pressure
changes divers experience underwater but
less familiar with the experience of others
who face related environmental conditions.
During a special safety seminar evening at
DAN headquarters, Neal Pollock, Ph.D., will
present “When Pressure Changes Are Not
About Diving.” This session will contrast the
exposures of divers with those of aviators,
astronauts, miners and canning workers.
In-Water Recompression Symposium

This unique conference combines research,
education and training into one weeklong
event. A two-day symposium will feature
medical and training experts discussing
and debating the merits of in-water
recompression as well as product and
service exhibits and networking events.
The follow-up training meeting provides an
opportunity for continuing medical education
credits for medical professionals, offering
hands-on learning in chamber operations.

DAN events, visit DAN.org/Events.
According to the American Heart
Association 2011 update, stroke
is the third-leading cause of
death and the leading cause of
long-term disability. In diving,
decompression illness can result
in neurological injuries, the signs
of which are similar to those of
a stroke.
As a diver, you should know
how to identify the signs of a
neurological injury and conduct
a neurological assessment,
which can provide valuable
information about someone who
may have experienced a stroke
or a dive injury. The signs of
these injuries are often subtle
and can go unrecognized, result-
ing in treatment delays.
If you are not prepared to
identify signs of a neurological
injury, take the DAN Neurological
Assessment course. To learn

SITUATIONAL
AWARENESS
No matter how much training,
preparation and experience
we have, we can still make
mistakes. In “Situational
Awareness: A Metacognitive
Approach to Personal and Team
Safety,” Richard Sadler, M.D.,
examines how mistakes happen
and offers useful strategies
divers can employ to enhance
their situational awareness.
Take a half hour out of your
day to review hard lessons
learned, and see how you can
apply those lessons to your
personal dive practices: Watch
the video at
/
onlineseminars.
