Do you dive at work or as a volunteer? If
so, it’s time to take the Diving First Aid for
Professional Divers (DFA Pro) course, which
prepares individuals who dive as a part
of their job or volunteer duties to address
emergencies that may arise. DFA Pro is
designed for commercial, professional,
aquarium and scientific divers, providing
first-aid knowledge and skills specific to
these work environments. It is also a great
risk-management tool for divemasters and
dive instructors. This newly revised course
meets the 2010 Guidelines for Resuscitation
and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) guidelines for
workplace CPR and first aid.
DFA Pro is a composite program that
covers the requirements of most accrediting
agencies in a single certification. It comprises
information from the Emergency Oxygen
for Scuba Diving Injuries, Neurological
Assessment, First Aid for Hazardous Marine
Life Injuries and CPR Health-Care Provider
with First Aid courses with an additional
section that covers bloodborne pathogens.
Learn the skills you need to manage an
emergency at your workplace. This two-
day course can prepare you to save a life.

The Bends: Diagnosis
and Treatment
Decompression sickness (DCS), often
referred to as “the bends,” cannot be
diagnosed with a specific medical test. When
determining the likelihood of DCS, the story
behind the symptoms is critically important.
It’s essential to get detailed information about
the patient’s diving history and consider that
the symptoms of DCS are similar to that of
many other medical conditions.
In his presentation “The Bends: Diagnosis
and Treatment,” Christopher Logue, M.D.,
offers important insight into the framework
that doctors use to diagnose and treat DCS.
Logue is an attending physician at University
of Pennsylvania Hyperbaric Medicine, a
partner of Divers Alert Network since 2010.
To learn more about DCS and
decompression illness, read “Back to
Basics: Understanding DCI” by Nick Bird,
M.D., on Page 88.
